I have an uncle who loves us so much. That or he just wants us to show us how successful he is?

Don’t be fooled though, this uncle is not a blood relative. In the Philippines like most Asian countries, the whole community is like one huge family. You have uncles and aunts who are not your parents siblings. The concept of family is so huge every one old enough to be your father or  mother is an instant uncle or aunt.

Anyway, every year this uncle all the way from the United States always surprises us with cakes on holidays or during my parents’ birthdays. We don’t expect it. The cakes just appear in our front door. Not just a simple roll you buy from a local bakery, but the slightly expensive ones you find online. It turns out he does order them online and sets the delivery date on or before the occasion. Last Christmas he sent us a chocolate ganache that I am enjoying as of this writing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhat’s amazing about it is that we rarely even talk. He sends cards along with the cake but with only a short greeting. The last time he visited the Philippines with his wife was like two or three years ago and everyone has moved on from that visit one way or another.  He even seems to have his hands full now with a new baby in tow. So why send cakes until now?

Corny or clingy as it may seem, I guess that’s what you call love. When someone takes the time off his busy schedule to remember you despite being oceans and cultures apart, that thoughtful ness is an aspect of love. Yeah, even if you rarely communicate (with rarely coming close to never). When someone still gives and offer you something without asking for anything in return, that is an aspect of love.

The God of love is no different.

Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens;
    your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
    your justice like the ocean depths.
You care for people and animals alike, O Lord.
     How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter
    in the shadow of your wings.
 You feed them from the abundance of your own house,
    letting them drink from your river of delights.
 For you are the fountain of life,
    the light by which we see.

Pour out your unfailing love on those who love you;
    give justice to those with honest hearts.

Psalm 36:5-10

You could say we serve a very clingy loving God.

While it is quite easy for most of us to leave dear friends due to various reasons, God doesn’t. While it is quite easy for us to dive into our busy schedules and leave friends alone in their own misery, God stays. While it is easy for most of us to just ignore people, God cares.

The big question is WHY?

One simple answer is He is love and His kind of love is unfailing.

His love never failed that He even set up His son to die on the cross just to be with you. In order to rid you of your filthy sin and be with you, God has given a huge part of Him. He allowed His son to be sacrificed in order for you to live. He does that despite you not communicating too much. He did that even if you never even bothered to get to know Him.

In this world where the common mentality is that you give something to get something, God is the first one to go against the norm. He gives you everything out of love even if you ignore Him or are totally oblivious to Him. He does that despite you chose not to or barely talk to Him at all. His love is one that does not necessitate something in return, but is totally overwhelming if you enter into a closer relationship with Him.

Imagine if you just broke up with a lover, or just lost your parents, or just suffered a business collapse, or just contracted a fatal disease, friends and even family might move away from you. They might leave you because they are busy with their own problems to care about you. They might say that they wanted to give you time to heal on your own. Sure, they might take some time to be with you but not totally devote their life to you. But God doesn’t. He is with you and never fails to make his presence felt. His love is unfailing in that way.

Ask Him to show you His love today. Ask Him to open your blind eyes to see his blessed love today.
