No Fear

In a span of three days, a series of possibly unrelated tragedies shook Metro Manila to its core.

edsa bombingJust this Monday, a provincial bus went up in flames along the Skyway. According to the reports no one was hurt when the bus burned. A day later, a tragic incident occurred with another bus. A local bus was bombed while traversing EDSA, one of the Metro Manila’s busiest highways. Four or five were killed instantly while at least 20 people were injured. Just when the city mayors have declared a day of mourning for those who died during the bombing, another tragedy occurred the next day. An electronic gondola carrying 11 persons gave way from the 20th floor. 10 people were instantly killed while the remaining survivor was critically injured.

Last week, carjackers and car dealer murders also became the headlines. Some car dealers were found missing after going out on a test drive with a client. They were found eventually several kilometers outside Metro Manila – dead and burned inside the cars they tried to sell. So far, investigations are still one going.

We can also remember that a few weeks ago, Brisbane along with other Australian towns was caught in a flash flood that damaged property and took away lives. Then, there’s the revival of the North and South Korean disputes wherein bombings were reported. But nothing beats the announcement that really shook the world: Facebook will shut down by mid-March. Too bad it turned out to be a hoax.

One month into the year and all these tragedies started talks about the end of the world. It was even speculated that the world would end on 2012. Ridiculous as it may seem a lot of people believed this especially with evidence gathered from all the catastrophes that occurred since the start of the year. It seemed to be enough to lead even the most informed to be deceived. Alarming as it may sound, we don’t need to fear at all, instead, we need to prepare our hearts.  This is just the wake up call.

2012 or not, the end of the world will happen but I still believe that it cannot be predicted by any numerical calculations on any ancient civilization. Even the Bible is silent about it, so how could they make an accurate calculation? Yet the fact remains that there would be an end, there will come a time when all things on this temporary earth would be laid to waste.

However we keep on forgetting that because there is an end, there would also be a beginning. We keep on forgetting God in the equation. The Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, He is behind all the schemes of End of the world basically because He wanted to replace it with a new world – one without the blemish of sin, the flow of tears or the anguish of pain.

“Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem  there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, even among the survivors whom the LORD calls.”

Joel 2:29-32

All the films made about Armageddon have neglected this and has slowly imbibed in our heads the message only the devil can give – you can try to prevent the end from happening and there are no gods who made any plans about a new world. Now that events have been happening, the corruptions from those movies have crept into the heads of most people. They have left out the God who designed it all and made the event look scary. Well it really is scary if you didn’t prepare your heart for it.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

If we would only look at all these events that has happened to us at the turn of the year, we need not fill our hearts with dread. Instead these should serve as a steady reminder that we need to change. We need to set our hearts on God and let the salvation offered by Jesus flow in us. That way, we wouldn’t be filled with dread. Jesus even likened this as birth pains.

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.” – Matthew 24:4-8.

Pain that happens before birth, it grows steadily stronger and harder until at the end, a new born baby will come out. In the same manner, these signs of the times will grow stronger and harder until a new heaven and earth has been prepared for us. Isn’t that amazing?

Let us then prepare ourselves. Let us accept the free gift of salvation from Jesus Christ from there, the we’ll find ourselves changed. We’ll find ourselves people without fear.

Romans 8:15 says, “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7
